This is an old Android vulnerability that has been given a refresh by cyber criminals. This time round it covers it’s tracks making the user’s recovery task that much more difficult. Any delay in a user reacting to a cyber attack only gives the advantage to the hackers, probably enabling them to steal more.

Yet again the advice is the same software updates and vigilance are vital to your cyber security. But there is one more wrinkle to an Android vulnerability:

It is down to your Android device/software vendor whether and when you get any updates. It is also dependent on how long the vendor decides to support your particular device or software. This can be a short as two years from the bigger manufacturers or never in the case of the smaller vendors. Then there is the issue of economic sanctions against the country of origin of your device that disrupts the complete support plan!

As ever check for updates and apply them. But if your device is no longer supported then it is probably time for a change if your are using it for PII or secure tasks.
