The EU and the United States have come to a deal over the protection of personal data.

Also the EU is taking steps to curb Big Tech dominating and controlling digital markets. The most interesting point here is the idea of interoperability between different messaging systems – for instance iMessages and WhatsApp – that we might benefit from. Although the promise by Telecom firms that they would not charge for roaming in Europe by UK customers, after we left the EU, turned out not to be true, so may be the UK will be excluded from message sharing as well.

However all of that is irrelevant, as just sitting here and thinking about it (no research involved) I cannot see how the different services can work together without opting for some really low levels of security, privacy and encryption. No negating the whole project before it gets started. The politicians (technology experts as ever) have set ridiculously short compliance times – which again if the tech companies met them would lead to further “lowest common denominator” compromises.
