A challenge to facial recognition surveillance

There are a lot of issues around facial recognition (Kostka, Steinacker and Meckel. 2021). Law enforcement likes it, that makes sense, but then where do they get their footage to examine from? Should we have privacy when we walk down a street? What happens if the machine learning behind the facial recognition software has a bias?

The Southern Co-Op is using facial recognition technology to combat crime in it’s stores, but this is now being reviewed by the Information Commissioner’s Office. Big Brother Watch reported this to the ICO, pointing out that innocent people may end up on a “secret” watchlist, without their knowledge.
