Yesterday Apple had its September event where all the new toys were revealed, including iOS 16 – which will be on the new devices announced and available as an upgrade for iPhones going back to 2017. The new iOS and MacOS will both support passkey security rather than passwords.

This is another step in Apple, Microsoft and Google’s commitment to work towards the FIDO standard of passwordlessness (I think I have invented that word but it works). I opted in with the Microsoft “no password” systems as soon as I could and will do the same with the Apple system as soon as I update to iOS 16.
