Law enforcement successes against cyber-crime – even though the criminals used end-to-end encryption

The nature of this news blog is that I am constantly highlighting bad news, cyber-crime, cyber-attacks, software vulnerabilities, phishing campaigns, exploitation of ordinary people, etc. etc.. To combat all this bad news we came up with the “Because It’s Friday” and “Weekend Read” sections. But I do report good news when it comes along. Yesterday it was good news about Twitter today it is law enforcement successes.

Police successes in stopping cyber-crime both here in the UK and abroad

The Metropolitan Police with other international law enforcement partners have closed down a cyber-crime “fraud-as-a-service” web operation.

What is interesting about this case is that the even though the criminals used end-to-end encryption (E2EE) good old fashioned police work led to the Met’s success against this cyber-crime.

Interpol has arrested about a thousand suspects in connection with breaking up a web of finance associated with cyber-crime.

Again good old fashioned police work beat the block chain, encryption and other methods the cyber criminals were using to obscure their crimes.

Both of these stories are good examples why the UK Government’s efforts to do away with the private citizen being able to use E2EE communications is not needed to beat criminals. It is needed only to make life easier for the authorities to have look.

Those who understood the risks of communicating without encryption, would move to other channels.

For paedophiles that would probably mean going back to the 1960s and leaving cryptic messages scrawled on public toilet walls. Do we now ban public toilets?
