The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) reported a “cyber incident” earlier this month. Now the Rhysida ransomware gang is demanding at least 20 bitcoin (about £450,000) in an auction for the confidential university data they say they have stolen.

A sample of the data for sale is available on the Dark Web – but there is no official comment from the UWS or the authorities as to it’s authenticity. A BBC reporter commented that is was unlikely to be faked.

Making the stolen data visible to not only the organisation that has been hacked, but to the individuals in that organisation who will be directly impacted by the release of that data is becoming a common tactic in the ransomware gang’s repertoire:
