Researchers just cannot leave things alone!

No sooner do I write an article telling you all about the cyber security benefits of using a VPN when you have doubts about an internet connection, than a team of academics come along with a paper showing that a VPN can be compromised.

My article:

It’s holiday time again – dust off that VPN!

Their paper:

Bypassing Tunnels: Leaking VPN Client Traffic by Abusing Routing Tables

And a more straight forward explanation of their attacks and how complicated it actually is:

There’s a good chance your VPN is vulnerable to privacy-menacing TunnelCrack attack – The Register

Your takeaway from this is – use a VPN, even on Apple devices. This attack is complicated to pull off and needs some privileged access access to complete – so you should still be safe.

Of course my headline was frivolous. It is because researchers and academics do carry out this type of research that the vendors are always improving their techniques and products to defeat the threat actors.
