Google is rolling out on-device protection for Android devices to combat the ever present threat of malicious Android apps. Play Protect has been part of the Play store for a while but that did not protect against apps installed outside of the Store. This extension to Google Play Protect does.
Google Play Protect adds real-time scanning to fight Android malware
Here is how to check whether your Android device is on or out. (From Google Support).
Verify your device certification status
* Open the Google Play Store app .
* At the top right, tap the profile icon.
* Tap Settings.
* To check if your device is Play Protect certified, tap About.
