Do not forget your hardware

We started the week with a look at patches and updates but how many of you also keep up with updating firmware on the hardware you own?

I have a Dell laptop and I have paid for an extended warranty and I am very cyber security conscious, so I have had many updates to the BIOS and other firmware on my Dell XPS to keep it current and secure. When was the last time you had a BIOS or firmware update to your PC?

Then there is the hardware in your office?

But what happens about updating the hardware at your home or your employee’s homes where they are “working from anywhere”?

Here is a complex attack on home routers being carried out by the Russians, to build a botnet using unpatched devices:

Your takeaway

You need to think about the edges of your cyber security, this includes the home routers of your team. Make them aware that they need to ensure that their devices are patched and up to date. As for the hardware in your office, you, a responsible member of your team, your IT or Cyber Security support should be taking care of those. Aren’t they?
