I am in Scotland this week, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ayr, for work so my life contains a lot of motorway driving. That reminded me of this BBC archive video, from Blue Peter in 1965, of what motorways were like when they were first built.
How many of you used to watch Blue Peter? I did.
Of course my quiet, safe, electronic, power assisted, air-conditioned, GPS guided, Bose stereo experience is far different to the cars in the video. When my Grandfather – who was well into his 90s at the time – saw my Toyota’s built in GPS navigation he was very impressed – especially with the voice instructions and the junction diagram between the speedometer and rev counter. He used to use strip maps, provided by the AA for the annual long journey to the holiday in Cornwall – a journey we now do four or five times a year. All of this was a long way from his first job at 10 years old, during the First World War, driving a pair of horses delivering farm produce.
Have a good weekend – I am going to enjoy some time at Loch Lomond.
