The Phishing Email and AI (pt. 3)

I have used the first two parts of this mini-series on Phishing attacks to look at the more general subject of social engineering because phishing is an application of social engineering aimed at you and your organisation. Start to understand the “how” of social engineering and you start to build defences against phishing.

Phishing. Why?

Usually, unless it is a targeted state-sponsored phishing attack, it is just money. There are exceptions of course but for our purposes, money is the motivation we are going to look at.

So, what do you have that is worth real money to the threat actors? Your organisation has information, you (and the other people in your organisation) have credentials that give access to that information. In an organisation that does not take its cyber security seriously, the hackers could hit the jackpot and steal the global administrator credentials. All these things have a value when sold on the Dark Web or ransomed.

Credentials are the Key

A very large number of phishing emails create a plausible scenario that will fool the victim to reveal their credentials. Once upon a time – no more than two years ago – creating those phishing emails was a challenge to the threat actors, especially when English was not their native tongue. Spelling, grammar, layout and idiom errors were everywhere, and it was easy to train staff to be on the lookout for these. I sat in a conference this week, where it was demonstrated that even though ChatGPT has built-in safeguards to stop hackers exploiting it, it can be manipulated.

AI does not think

Don’t blame ChatGPT here. We refer to it as Artificial Intelligence – that is good for marketing – but it is not intelligent like we are. It is programmed to respond to requests from its store of information using its algorithms that interpret the input and produce statistically accurate output. It does not think and it does not know it is being manipulated. Also, anyone who has played with one of these large language model (LLM) AIs knows that from time to time the “statistically accurate output” can be complete gibberish. In that case the hacker will simply rephrase the question and go again. Once they have it right, other software including AI can repurpose and personalise this attack phishing email to thousands if not millions of potential victims.
