Here is a quick explanation of gravity assist from Mashable.

For the record 1974 comes before 1977, so the Voyager missions were not the first spacecraft to use gravity assist for extended space exploration. (Watch the video, they even have a graphic that disproves their Voyager statement.) Here is a video from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum about the Mariner missions.
