On his own confession – Nick clicked on a link in what looked like a genuine email from X and then lost control of his account. The email had explained that he had made a post that had violated X’s rules and his account was going to be closed – obviously closing his account was a serious issue for a prominent BBC journalist – so he clicked on the link. Classic social engineering.

When asked why he clicked on the link he said: “Why? Because my defences were down – I was tired after a very long day, I was rushing, and the phishing email made me think that if I didn’t act fast I’d be in trouble.”
