The secure messaging app Signal has made the news recently with various members of the US Government using it to avoid accountability (possibly) and to inappropriately share their thoughts on secret operations with journalists and then the rest of the world (accually).
I am a Signal user – I like the privacy and security it offers.
I have written about Signal. This article looks at the way the app can bypass some of the fundementals of good cyber security and also how it can successfully be managed in your organisation.
This article expands on the use of Signal in an organisation.
Microsoft Recall – probably all bad news…
Microsoft Recall is a feature of Windows that regularly takes and saves a screenshot of whatever you are doing at that moment on your screen. See what I wrote about this feature here:
A feature no one asked for | Smart Thinking Solutions
Microsoft backs down… | Smart Thinking Solutions
Obviously screenshots floating around of private Signal chats was never going to meet Signal’s privacy standards so they have done something about that:
Signal now blocks Microsoft Recall screenshots on Windows 11 – BleepingComputer
Your Takeaway
Good cyber security starts with good privacy.
Signal may have a place in your organisation – it does in mine for certain communications that have to be confidential. However if you are going to use it you need to manage it’s use.
