The cost of a data breach

Here is a follow-up story to the recent Capita data breach.

Capita admits cost of March breach will be up to £20M • The Register

Capita is the UK’s largest outsourcing company with the UK armed forces, government and some very large companies as its clients. So the costs of cleaning up and making them secure and trustworthy again will obviously be high.

Your takeaway from this is – your organisation may not be as big as Capita but remember any data breach will be costly to deal with both in terms of money and reputation. The reputational costs will be even higher if you have to reveal that you did not take sufficient steps to protect your data before the attack.
