Life imitates art! “crypto muggings” and proportionality

I just realised I am waiting for “crypto doughnuts”!

We recently sat in on a meeting where a security expert suggested to our client, that they move from Microsoft 365 for Business to E5, as they would benefit from the added cyber security features of the enterprise grade Microsoft 365. Now what this consultant was saying was true (he was there at the invitation of a board member), there are huge benefits from being on an enterprise version of Microsoft 365, but that comes with a total cost of ownership of among other things; an IT/security team to run it and the very large increase in the per head per month cost.

Later the client went with Octagon’s advanced threat protection solutions and a continuation on Microsoft 365 Business Premium as this fitted their business size and model, budget and appetite for risk.

We’d like E5 at Octagon – but the benefits to us do not out-weigh the costs.

This is something everyone should consider, when an expert pitches their next costly cyber security solution to you.

So how did I get onto this subject? I have always liked this cartoon from Randall Munroe over on xkcd.com:

xkcd: Security

Now there is this story in The Guardian which is just the cartoon in real life!

‘Crypto muggings’: thieves in London target digital investors by taking phones | Cryptocurrencies | The Guardian

The takeaway from this is we all need the best cyber security we can get, but it has to be effective and proportional to our individual situations.
