In any cyber attack where the criminals want to make money, there is usually a server somewhere out there on the internet, being used for command and control of the malware.
Now there this is being offered as a service the threat actors can purchase, to save them the full expense of setting up an obfuscated server so the authorities cannot trace them. Since the service called, “Dark Utilities”, set up at the beginning of the year it has attracted over 3000 users.
This Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) comes with a wide range of malicious capabilities, including being able to run DD0S attacks, enable remote access and exfiltrate data. Technical support is included via Discord and Telegram – but it is still not an argument for end-to-end-encryption (E2EE) to be done away with for the ordinary citizen, just to catch these threat actors.
