49ers hit by BlackByte ransomware

San Francisco’s American Football team, The 49ers, has been hit by a ransomware attack. The information relating to the compromised data has appeared on a Dark Web list, where the hackers hope to shame the organisation into paying the ransom before stolen sensitive data is leaked. (No encryption involved in this ransom demand – so your back-up is useless as mitigation!)

This attack could have had more impact if the 49ers had been playing in NFL Super Bowl last night – the team missed out on playing in the final following a lucky win by the LA Rams.

Why am I interested in this? I follow the NFL and the 49ers, so some of my personal data may be among that, which has been compromised. So before writing this post I have changed my49er passwords.

p.s. I stayed up and watched the Super Bowl last night, and I was a Cincinnati fan for one night – so more disappointment there!
