That headline intrigued you didn’t it? It’s the title of an essay by Bruce Schneier, whose titles are often intriguing. How about “Click here to kill everybody”, “Data and Goliath” or “Liars and Outliers”?
Schneier has a great sense of humour and always gives good value as a speaker too. Last Friday Clive and I attended a presentation featuring him and Bill Buchanan, one of the experts at Edinburgh Napier University, where Clive studied recently for his MSc.
Initially led by Bill, Bruce was asked a host of technical questions about cyber security and related matters. He had views on everything, and was particularly forthcoming on how bad he considers blockchain to be, (which validated my own worries about it).
Clive asked some questions and was told that it is not just our NHS that is using outdated equipment and software – almost all healthcare providers around the world are the same, which makes them targets for cyber attacks. Clive also asked Bruce’s opinion on our Government’s attempt to end encryption on messages, and was pleased that Bruce also thought that making everybody’s communications less secure was not a good way to catch criminals as they will simply use other ways to do their dirty deeds.
All the way through his presentation Bruce Schneier was giving current examples of what is happening out there in cyber space and both Clive and I were pleased that whatever he mentioned was something we had already included in our blog here at SmartThinking.Solutions. So make sure you read both Bruce’s blog and ours every day to keep up-to-date!
