I saw the news last week that Lincoln College had closed because of cyber attacks – I was obviously attracted to the story as we live near to Lincoln, here in the UK, but it was not that Lincoln College. Because of my teaching commitments the story of the US Lincoln College closing did not make the blog.
Ransomware the final nail in coffin for small US university • The Register
Imagine my surprise this morning, when checking my news sources to see that the story about the US-based Lincoln College was headed up with a picture of our Lincoln College! A screen shot of The Record’s page is above.
Obviously a mistake.
Many universities and colleges around the world, including, the Lincoln College in photo, Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and Lincoln University (not the college shown in the picture but here in our city) have suffered cyber incidents, whether through targeting or phishing incidents involving students or staff.
For individuals and organisations we offer a very flexible social engineering and email phishing training course including an online self assessed version, to help equip their people to cope with one of the most prolific types of cyber attack.
Update 15 May 2022
I emailed the editor of The Record, about the image, who thanked me for letting him know there was an issue – and the error has been fixed:
