Because It’s Friday – Titanium = Ti

Interesting facts about titanium:

  • Titanium was first discovered in Cornwall by William Gregor in 1791.
  • Titanium has become a popular material for campers and backpackers because it is very lightweight, without the health risks of aluminium and strong. I have quite a bit of titanium equipment for those reasons. Urban myth says that titanium became more available to the civilian market and dropped in price because of the radical decline in demand for titanium, by the militaries of all sides, following the end of the Cold War.

However titanium is not what today’s “Because It’s Friday” is about. It is about the Periodic Table which when I was at college I had memorised.

University Challenge

Diana and I watch University Challenge and are always impressed by the knowlege shown by the contestants – we even answer some of the questions ourselves. Every series there are many questions relating to the periodic table, some of which I get right but many that I do not. I feel I should do better.

My glasses case does not help that much either although my spectacle frames are made of titanium! Though this case would probably be a banned item from an exam room.

Have a good weekend.
