There is a very odd reference in this 1989 article from the BBC Archive comparing using a Walkman to mental illness! But I am sure that is what happens when you turn something so basic into high-brow!
It is interesting how the American advert manages to put a hyphen between walk and man.
I had a Walkman – not a personal stereo – which I carried on my backpacking trips across Europe, the USA and Australia. I am uncertain how many AA batteries I used on trains, planes, coaches and cars (when I was not driving) but I am sure it was a lot! The number of cassettes (and batteries) I could pack in my rucksack was always an issue. I cannot remember what happened to it but I do remember that towards the end, it was held together with glue and tape.
Smartphones and iPods were still a few years in the future.
The video is worth a watch, a celebration of retro tech.
Have a good weekend
