BitLocker for Cyber Security

BitLocker is an often-overlooked cyber security tool provided by Microsoft.

Why you should understand BitLocker

Oh dear, you have lost your laptop, perhaps it was stolen or maybe you simply threw it away. I hope there was nothing important or sensitive on it! At best you would have coursework or embarrassing photos, but on the other hand what if you had bank details on there, your CV and ID documents, trade secrets and perhaps that convenient little document you have (don’t do this) with all your accounts and passwords in because it’s easier.

Even a smashed computer could have data intact on its drives, and not everybody has the knowledge or time to cleanly wipe away data. Windows 10 and 11 do have a handy feature to wipe themselves and purge data, if you know how. Ideal world scenario you are able to wipe your drives, but in case you can’t Microsoft has BitLocker!

Using BitLocker

BitLocker to the rescue

Microsoft released BitLocker in late January 2007 as part of its efforts to improve data security. BitLocker is a form of FDE aka Full Disk Encryption, converting nearly all the data using encryption algorithms. This has been available since Windows Vista on Pro / Ultimate / Enterprise versions.

Once enabled, BitLocker will render all your data unreadable to anyone without the proper key, the drive may as well be blank. It is very easy to turn on, requiring you to save your key carefully and it will process in the background as you continue working. Keeping the key safe is important, but typically it will be saved with your Microsoft or Azure account.

With BitLocker on, losing your hard drive will only cost you a hard drive, not your business, your finances and identity. If it is an option for you, consider turning it on. Keep your data YOURS!
