AI and Malware

In August the support team at Octagon Technology edited the company’s newsletter – whilst Diana and I were away. They chose a theme of artificial intelligence (AI) – here are the articles they wrote:

Careful with that A.I. Eugene ! / How NOT to A.I. / Stop feeding the machine.

Technological Singularity

Use AI to check a legal document

My contribution was an article looking at how AI can assit in a cyber attack.

Now researchers at OpenAI have confirmed that threat actors are using ChatGPT to write and improve their malware:

OpenAI confirms threat actors use ChatGPT to write malware (bleepingcomputer.com)

And why wouldn’t they. Hackers and threat actors will exploit any loophole, weakness or vulnerability they can find – including any legitimate systems – to further their attacks.

What counts is that OpenAI is taking this abuse of their system seriously and have disrupted more than twenty malicious operations they had discovered. Here is their report:

An update on disrupting deceptive uses of AI | OpenAI

These actions look positive for the rest of us, who deal with cyber security everyday.
