Now we are going out again – do not forget your VPN

Now we are back out there using public Wi-Fi again here is a timely reminder from TechRepublic about keeping yourself secure.

Don’t browse on public Wi-Fi without a VPN | TechRepublic

A few weeks ago I was away, both for a break and to get some time away from the office to catch up on my writing and course development – as you can see from the photo it was a relaxing place to work.

However I was using the resort’s public Wi-Fi and every time I connected I used a VPN to protect my privacy. There are other security and privacy technologies in play when I am connecting, https, MFA, AAA etc., but I still use a VPN to secure that first step on the WiFi network and to protect my internet traffic from unauthorised inspection.

For years I have used CyberGhost VPN, across all my devices, and have found it very reliable. I also have a personal VPN installed in the office, but this can be slower than CyberGhost but it still gets plenty of use.

VPN’s are an end to end encryption (E2EE) technology and the use of them by law abiding UK citizens could be impacted by the UK Government’s draft Online Safety Bill.

If you need advice about setting up a VPN service for your company office or a personal VPN on your laptop then Octagon has a wide range of experience delivering these services to clients. Or do you want to know about any of the acronyms I have used in this article – then please get in contact.

The claim about using a VPN to watch TV outside the country of operation, is usually not possible, as many content suppliers block access to users on a VPN. For instance if I connect to bbc.co.uk when I am on the VPN, I am redirected to bbc.com and Amazon Prime video does not play. I have not tried it outside the country, these examples are things I have noted when I have accidentally left my VPN on and then accessed these services.

E2EE – a new acronym for you – is it good or bad? Or why privacy is difficult. – Smart Thinking Solutions
